I'm not opening any of the birthday packages I've received until it is my birthday

I want to open them now. Now! But I can wait a few more days.

I'm no longer looking at proofs--Terminal Humming is going to print right now, and I should have copies in hand soon, soon. In time for my reading in LA at the Poetic Research Bureau on June 27 at 4pm (more details later).

I'm debating what kind of a birthday cake to make this year. I love carrot cake. I have a recipe for a weird but interesting cake made from buckwheat. I'm drowning in berries, so perhaps I should make something involving those.

I can't bake anything that requires a nonstick pan (the fumes from nonstick coating asphyxiate birds, and they're probably not good for people, either)--but does anyone have cake suggestions?

Happy almost-Birthday! May I offer the following cake suggestion, a Chocolate Chip Cake originally called to my attention by my aunt Martha in Amarillo? It's not buckwheat, and by no means could it be considered "good for you," but it's so delish, and very birthday-ish:

1 box yellow cake mix...butter flavor is best
1 small pkg instant cheesecake flavor pudding
1/2 cup vegetable oil
3 eggs
1/2 cup water
1 small container sour cream (8 ounce)
6 ounces chocolate chips( 1 generous cup)
Mix and pour into a sugared bundt pan...Use regular sugar.
Bake at 350 for 55-65 minutes. Cool in the pan for 10-15 minutes then tip out onto your cake plate. Don't put it on the cake plate immediately since it may be hot enough to crack the plate.

I looooove carrot cake, but I want to point out that cream cheese frosting can elevate other kinds of cakes too (lemon, chocolate, etc.). I also looooove coconut cake. Which might be nice with berries?

Kathleen--that cake does sound tasty and very simple to make!

Elisa--I'm glad there are others who love carrot cake, and I definitely agree about the cream cheese frosting. Though I've never tried it with coconut--sounds good.

Megan--I've been considering the possibilities of cupcakes, which are cute and easy to share. But that blueberry buttermilk cake you made looks good. Just the kind of simple summer dessert cake that I love.

These involved coconut and berries and are simple to make - though I'n not sure they're very healthy (lots of butter...)

I tell myself that coconut is good for the thyroid and blueberries are antioxidants...

Happy birthday!
