Actually there is a budgie crisis, not only in California but in the rest of the U.S. Overbreeding for purposes of pretty colors have led there to be more and more ill and inbred budgies in the U.S., animals that live only three or four years instead of the 10-14 that's possible for the species. It's one of the reasons Lorraine and I no longer have budgies: it's increasingly difficult to find healthy ones.

Lester was not commenting on that in this particular photo, but he nonetheless does urge that anyone buying budgies be very careful about who they do it from.
