i wonder if they do this with bark or leaves in the wild
I've often wondered that, too. In the wild, most types of parrotlets nest in trunks of trees, but as a species they inhabit many different types of habitats in South and Central America--everything from deciduous forests to grasslands to arid scrub environments. So it's quite possible that they might use bark or leaves the same way Lester uses paper.
